Running a CSA is already a full-time job. Planting, harvesting, packing, and deliveries, it is more than enough to fill your days. Yet every season, the same cycle repeats: boxes are sent out, customers request swaps, and suddenly you are overwhelmed with emails, sticky notes, and spreadsheet tabs.
What feels like a simple request, such as “Can I trade kale for carrots?”, quickly snowballs. One swap leads to another, then another, until you have lost track of who is getting what. A handful of adjustments can turn into hours of back-and-forth, leaving you with less time for the work that really matters.
That is exactly the burden Box Swaps removes. As part of our Box Builder feature, Swaps gives customers the freedom to choose their own substitutions, while you regain valuable time, reduce the manual workload, and keep operations running smoothly. The result is that members feel more satisfied and connected to their box, and you get to run your CSA with less stress.
Our existing Box Builder already makes it easy to create CSA shares, produce boxes, and meal kits. You set up your box contents, define your pricing, and provide customers with a reliable way to purchase local food. But we heard from customers that they wanted to increase the flexibility of box creation. Customers wanted more choice, and farmers wanted a way to offer that choice without chaos.
With Box Swaps, you can now:
No more managing swaps through email, customer notes, or tracking them separately; everything is built right into Local Line.
This feature has been one of the most requested by CSAs on Local Line. Here’s why it matters:
When a customer adds a box to their cart, they’ll see their swap options clearly laid out. They can choose their preferred product with a single click.
For example:
It’s fast, intuitive, and feels like a natural extension of the CSA box experience.
Box Swaps also extend to subscription orders, giving customers the same flexibility to edit their box before it’s finalized. When the customer's next order is created, customers can log in to their account and make swaps to the default box contents before the order opens. If a seller updates the default box contents, those changes will automatically apply to all future subscription orders for that box, including creating new swaps for box items.
When a customer makes a swap on their subscription box, that choice will carry forward to future orders as long as the swapped item remains part of the box. For example, if they swap rutabaga for carrots one week, they’ll continue to receive carrots in future orders until either the customer makes a new swap or the seller removes the item or swap option from the box, at which the seller's default choice replaces the removed item.
Box Swaps are now available inside Box Builder. You can start setting them up in your box settings today. This is just the beginning. We’ll continue to invest in features that make your CSA or food box program more profitable, efficient, and loved by customers.

Box Swaps are a feature inside Local Line’s Box Builder that give customers the flexibility to personalize their CSA or subscription box. Instead of being locked into a preset selection, customers can swap certain items for alternatives you’ve defined. For example, if a box includes rutabaga but you’ve enabled swaps for carrots, a customer can choose the option that best suits their household. This simple functionality removes the back-and-forth communication that used to overwhelm farmers with emails, notes, and spreadsheets.
Managing a CSA is already a full-time job with planting, harvesting, packing, and delivering. The last thing you need is hours of admin work tracking swaps. Box Swaps automate the process, saving valuable time and reducing stress. Beyond operational efficiency, they directly improve customer satisfaction. When customers can adjust their box contents, they feel more connected to their share and more likely to stay subscribed for the season. This feature streamlines your workload while also boosting loyalty and retention.
As the farmer or vendor, you’re in full control of what gets swapped. When building a box, you decide which items are eligible for swaps and set the possible alternatives. For example, you could allow customers to trade kale for carrots or rutabaga for parsnips. This flexibility not only supports customer choice but also helps you manage inventory effectively. If one crop is abundant and another is limited, you can set swap rules to balance availability with customer preference.
Box Swaps extend seamlessly to subscription boxes. Customers on recurring plans can log into their account before each order is finalized and make changes to the default contents. Once they make a swap, that preference carries over to future orders until they decide to change it again or until the item or swap option is no longer available. This ensures a consistent, personalized experience for your members while keeping your subscription management simple and automated.
If a swap option becomes unavailable due to inventory changes or seasonal shifts, the system will automatically revert to your default product choice for that box. For instance, if carrots were a swap option for rutabaga but you’ve run out of carrots, the system will ensure rutabaga goes into the box instead. This safeguard means you don’t have to manually track substitutions, and your customers are never left wondering what they’ll receive.
Every customer change is instantly reflected across all your operational documents, including pick lists, pack sheets, and reports. That means no more separate tracking systems or overlooked notes. Whether you have ten swaps or a hundred, everything stays organized and accurate in one place, so your packing line runs smoothly and efficiently.
When a customer adds a box to their cart, they’ll see their swap choices clearly displayed. They can then make their selection with just a click before completing checkout. It feels natural to the shopping experience and avoids confusion later. This upfront clarity helps customers feel confident in their purchase, knowing they’re getting the items that best suit their needs.
Retention is one of the biggest challenges for CSAs, and flexibility plays a huge role in keeping customers happy. Some households love beets while others won’t touch them. By allowing swaps, you accommodate those differences without extra effort on your part. Customers who feel empowered to choose are more satisfied and far less likely to cancel. Small touches like Box Swaps can be the deciding factor between someone leaving after a season and someone sticking with your CSA for years.
